There’s something special about this time of year—the space between winter’s quiet stillness and the full bloom of spring. The air shifts, the light feels warmer, and you can feel the world awakening around you.

A Life-Changing Moment

On April 1st, (just a few days ago) I turned 57.

That morning, I sat in the same spot I did 11 years ago—our now living room, flooded with light from the windows that made me fall in love with this house.

Back then, we were in the thick of house hunting after moving back to Baton Rouge from New York City. It had been months of searching, and we finally found the one.

The next morning, we received the call. Our offer had been accepted! Just hours later, we walked into my breast surgeon's office for the results of what we thought had been a routine biopsy.

Just a 1% chance it was cancer.

I was the 1%.

A few days later, on April 1st, I sat in that living room as the home inspector walked through. Boxes hadn’t been packed. Surgeries hadn’t yet been scheduled. But even in the uncertainty, I knew in my gut—we were supposed to be here. This house would hold us through everything to come.

And it did.

That April day marked the beginning of one of the hardest, most transformative seasons of my life. Treatments. Healing. Rebuilding. And eventually, creating again. This house became a place of refuge and renewal.

This April 1st, my birthday, sitting in the same room 11 years later, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. For the light that still pours in through those windows. For everything this home has witnessed.
