Rhyolite and Llanite Gemstone Jewelry: What’s the Difference?

If you're like me, you love a good gemstone story! Today, I've got two to share.

These earthy stones may look like sisters at first glance, but take a closer look, and you'll see they each have a personality all their own.

I'm excited to introduce a brand new gemstone to the shop alongside a restocked collector favorite: Llanite and Rhyolite Gemstone Jewelry.

Whether you're drawn to one or the other (or both!), I hope you'll enjoy learning about their origins, meanings, and what makes them so special.

What Is Rhyolite? Meaning, Origins & Why It’s Called the Artist’s Stone
Rhyolite is one of those stones that makes you pause and look closer. It's been a collector favorite since I opened Jewel of Havana 20 years ago!

It’s formed from volcanic lava that cooled slowly, allowing beautiful swirls of green, brown, cream, and flecks of pink to emerge.

It's almost like an abstract painting crafted by nature herself.
Where Is It Found?

You’ll find Rhyolite in several parts of the western U.S. especially Oregon, Arizona, and the Pacific Northwest.

Each region gives it its own personality, with subtle variations in color and pattern.

Fun Fact:

The name “Rhyolite” comes from the Greek word rhyax, meaning “stream of lava.” Though it’s chemically similar to granite, rhyolite cools above ground, which gives it a completely different appearance and texture.

The Metaphysical Side of Rhyolite:

Often called the “stone of creativity”, Rhyolite is thought to spark inspiration, help with emotional balance, and connection to nature.

It’s perfect for those of us who feel most at peace with a little dirt on our boots and the scent of pine in the air. It's especially loved by artists, writers, and anyone who feels recharged by the outdoors.

What Is Llanite?
The Only Gemstone with Natural Blue Quartz (From Texas!)

Now let's talk about Llanite (pronounced LAN-ite) This gem is a rare stone and dazzling in its own quiet way.

With soft earthy tones of brown and pink and unexpected flashes of blue quartz sparkling across its surface.

Where it’s from:

Llanite is only found in one place on Earth - Llano County, Texas. That’s it.

Fun Fact:

The blue shimmer in Llanite comes from blue quartz with tiny inclusions of ilmenite and rutile. The exact mix of minerals that creates those brilliant blue quartz inclusions doesn't occur naturally anywhere else. That rarity alone makes it pretty special, don’t you think?

A Little History:

Llanite was officially identified by geologists in the 1970s. It comes from some of the oldest exposed rock in North America, located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country.

Locals sometimes call it the "Texas Sparkle Stone."
Metaphysical Meaning Behind Llanite:

Known as a calming, balancing stone, Llanite is believed to help us "go with the flow" and trust our intuition. It’s thought to help you let go of stress, trust the timing of life, and promote a gentle sense of optimism.

So What’s the Difference Between Rhyolite and Llanite?

These two stones are actually related. Llanite is considered a rare variety of Rhyolite but they each bring their own energy, origin, and look.

Here’s a little side-by-side to help you get to know them:

Which One Speaks to You?

That's my favorite part of gemstones - they connect with each of us a little differently.

Whether you're feeling inspired by Rhyolite's earthy charm or drawn to Llanite's soothing sparkle, these pieces were created full of intention to help you carry their energy with you wherever you go.

I'd love to hear! Are you Team Rhyolite or Team Llanite?

Each piece is handmade with care and designed to let the natural beauty of the stone shine. I hope one of them speaks to your heart.
