Onyx can be identified by its black base and white upper layer with parallel banding. Agate and onyx are both varieties of layered chalcedony that differ only in the form of the bands: agate has curved bands and onyx has parallel bands. The colors of its bands range from white to almost every color. Onyx is formed in the air-filled cavities of lava. Onyx is known as the 7th wedding anniversary gemstone.  The name comes from the Greek word onux, which means nail or claw. Onyx is found in various regions of the world, particularly Brazil, but can also be found in Uruguay, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, India, Hawaii and Madagascar.
