Keshi Pearl Necklace Set and Mother of Pearl Cameo Ring
A Pearl is composed of calcium carbonate and is produced within the soft tissue of a living shelled mollusk. It is formed when an irritation caused by a foreign particle makes the oyster secrete nacre to cover it. Nacre is the same material that forms the mollusk's shell. Pearls can be formed anywhere from four months to seven years. The size of the pearl depends on the amount of time it is left to form before harvesting. A single mollusk can create dozens of pearls at a time depending on how many particles enter the shell.
Pearls can be dyed many colors including yellow, green, blue, brown, pink, purple, or black. Pearls are the birthstone for the month of June and used to commemorate the 3rd and 30th wedding anniversaries. There are 2 different kinds of Pearls, freshwater and saltwater. The state of Kentucky named the Freshwater Pearl its ‘state gemstone’ in 1986. Today, pearls are found primarily in the seas off Bahrain and Australia.
