The name Emerald comes from an old French word, esmeralde, derived from the Greek word smaragdos, meaning green stone. Emeralds are the most precious stone in the Beryl group and are the birthstone for those born in the month of May. The are the official anniversary gemstone for the 20th and 35th years of marriage. North Carolina named the Emerald it's state gemstone in 1973.
Regarded as a holy gemstone, the oldest known finds were made near the Red Sea in Egypt. Colombia is the most famous source for deep green emeralds but they can also be found in South America, Africa and across Europe. The Emerald is seen as a stone of successful and abundant love and positive actions and outcomes.
