Uncovering Jade: A Guide to Jade Gemstone Jewelry

New Indonesian Jade Jewelry
Until I started making jewelry and going to gem shows, I had no idea there were different kinds of jade.

And to make things even more confusing, I learned there are many stones called jade that are actually completely different gemstones.

The term "jade" is quite vague, covering multiple gemstones that might appear similar but are made of entirely different minerals. It can be really confusing and hard to figure out.

So what exactly is jade?

There are actually only two minerals classified as “true” jade. They possess distinct mineral compositions, structures, and colors, setting them apart in the world of gemology.

Nephrite jade, the traditional Chinese jade, characterized by its smooth texture and a waxy luster, is composed of calcium and magnesium.

This mineral is renowned for its toughness and has been a revered stone in Chinese culture for thousands of years.

Nephrite jade varies in color, ranging from creamy whites to dark greens.

Jadeite Jade:

Jadeite jade is often considered the more precious form of jade due to its vibrant hues and higher translucency.

It is a sodium and aluminum-rich pyroxene mineral. Originating primarily from Myanmar (formerly Burma).

Jadeite jade's colors span a broad spectrum, including vivid greens, lavenders, whites, yellows, and even reds.

While nephrite and jadeite are the traditional forms of jade, various other stones are often referred to as "jade" due to their resemblance. These stones may not meet the criteria of genuine jade in terms of mineral composition, yet they exhibit stunning colors, patterns, and textures that make them equally precious and gorgeous jewelry pieces to wear.

Jade or "Jade": Which jade is it?

Now that we know what true jade is, let's take a closer look at some of my favorite gemstones with the last name Jade. Some are the real deal and some are lookalikes. Are you able to spot the difference?

Indonesian Jade:

Lookalike! - Indonesian jade, also known as "Serpentine Jade," is not true jade but a type of serpentine mineral.

It's commonly found in Indonesia and possesses a color range similar to nephrite, including soft tones of green, yellow, and brown.

The country's rich mineral deposits create captivating swirls and intricate patterns, making each piece a distinctive work of art.

Real Deal! - Burmese jade predominantly refers to jadeite jade sourced from Myanmar (Burma).

Renowned for its high-quality and vibrant colors, Burma jade is often considered the finest and most valuable type of jadeite due to its exceptional translucency and intense green hues.

Burmese jade holds immense cultural significance in Asia, especially in Chinese and Southeast Asian cultures.

African Jade:

Lookalike! - African jade, also known as Transvaal jade or verdite, is a green grossular garnet.

While not true jade, these stones earned their name because of their resemblance to nephrite jade. This opaque green garnet can range in color from Kelly to forest green.

Real Deal! - Also known as Canadian Jade or BC Jade, this nephrite jade is found in the province of British Columbia, Canada.

This variety is esteemed for its unique green shades, ranging from pale to dark greens, and is known for its toughness and durability.

First Nations peoples have cherished this jade for centuries, using it for tools, artwork, and ceremonial objects.

Australian Jade:

Lookalike! - Australia is home to one of the largest known nephrite jade deposits in the world, but the gemstones commonly referred to as Australian Jade are not from these mines at all.  They are actually in the quartz family! An apple-green to deep green variety of chalcedony called Chrysoprase.

Exploring the world of jade gemstone jewelry means diving into the unique traits of each gem and appreciating the nuances. They all have their own charm and cultural significance. Whether true jade or its lookalikes, they are all worthy of a spot in the jade gemstone family tree. I hope you find a new favorite to add to your jewelry box. 💚
